This evening, partly because this is my year of living curiously, I’m starting something new. I have signed up for a drawing class. This seems appropriate for this year of curiosity for two reasons: I haven’t taken an art class since elementary school, which means I’m entering what is essentially new territory for me; and it is a course specifically aimed at helping people see things in new ways. (It’s called “Learn to See, Learn to Draw”.) Consider for a moment my tendency to want to be good at everything I do—and only do what I am good at—and you’ll see this represents a real departure from the usual for me. (My drawings consist mainly of geometric shapes and stick figures.) How to make the experience worthwhile? I’m counting on curiosity to help me open up and enjoy and profit from the class. A chance to practice. J
I’ll report tomorrow on how it went.
