Yesterday I did my bookkeeping—a lot of bookkeeping because I was gone for four months and didn’t do it thoroughly when I was away. It took me all day to catch up and organize everything.
What helped? Pretending it was a puzzle (as, indeed, it often was ;-)) I like puzzles, and that made it possible to be curious. For example: No record of that transaction? No receipt to reduce my taxes? How else could I get that information? How do those two pieces of paper hang together? What does the Internal Revenue Service really need from me?
It didn’t always work, but I don’t think I would have lasted a whole day without achieving that approach at least some of the time.
